I have teamed up with a group of beautiful bloggers to share a ‘Day in the Life’ and what it looks like around here on the regular. We all met through the wonderful world that is Instagram (be sure to check out each of their amazing feeds, links at the bottom of the post!), and I couldn’t be happier to be part of such a gorgeous group.
Now honestly no two days are the same in our house, but we do have a general routine that looks very similar from day to day. The day I chose to document was a very uneventful one, but one that ended up being quite different from how a day typically runs for us. So here we go…
Hunter woke up slightly later than normal today – 5:30 am seems to be his usual time and today he was awake at 6 am. I go down to the kitchen to prepare his morning bottle and give it to him in his cot. I also place a few books in his cot so he can sit and ‘read’ once he is finished. I have started doing this each morning so it gives me a chance to get ready before our day starts. I am from the school of never leaving the house without makeup. Even if we are just staying at home I still complete this part of my routine as it makes me feel ready for the day and prepared to face anything haha. I also let Lady (our Samoyed) outside, Sebastian in for his breakfast (he sleeps outside, as he is pretty much a Tiger, not a cat) and let Belle (our baby cat) out of the Laundry where she sleeps. Some mornings it feels like we are wrangling a Zoo, but I love them! I head back to my bathroom to do my hair and makeup.
At 6:30 am Hunter decides it is time to get up! I have almost finished getting ready and will need to get dressed and complete my hair during Hunter’s morning sleep. I go back to H’s room and get him up and change his nappy. I usually leave him in his pyjamas until after his first nap of the day. We put on a load of laundry (Hunter likes to ‘help’ me do this) and then head into the kitchen to get breakfast ready.
Some nights I go to bed with a pristine kitchen, other nights I do not, and put it on the list of things to do the next day… Today was the latter (I am always annoyed at myself when this happens!) so I need to sort the kitchen out as well as get our breakfast prepared. Today is the day before our groceries arrive, and we have barely any food in the fridge or cupboard! So our meals today probably won’t be completely in line with what a normal day would look like. I make Hunter and myself some crumpets with vegemite, and cut up a few strawberries so I feel like a better mother ;).
Once breakfast and the kitchen are done at around 7:30 am, I leave Hunter with Hubby (this isn’t a normal part of our schedule – Jarrod normally leaves for work between 6-7am, but he had had a school function the previous night, so was given a late start!) so I can hang the load of washing that has just finished. I also put away a pile of Hunter’s folded clothes, change our sheets and then play with H for a little while.
At 8 am, I decide to put H down for his morning nap a little earlier than usual, as we need to be at the shops around 9 am. I do this then go back up to my bedroom, pick my outfit and finish getting myself ready for the day and pack our bag. I watch Hunter on the monitor, and he plays in his cot and finally falls asleep around 8:25 am. I let him have 15 minutes and then wake him up so we can get ready. I quickly choose his outfit and get him dressed, and pop him in the car. We are out of the house by 8:45 am.
We arrive at our local shopping centre, as I received an email the previous week saying that it was our coffee shop’s birthday, and they were giving away Keep Cups and coffee to the first 25 customers, so thought we would try our luck! I also had a complimentary cake for my birthday month that was due to expire, so wanted to also use that. We arrive at the coffee shop only to find out that they open a whole hour before the rest of the shopping centre haha. So no Keep Cup for us, but I got Hunter some banana bread and a coffee for myself.
I have a few more errands to run at other locations, so we jump back in the car to start those. The first stop is the petrol station to fill up the car (thank goodness for the Pay @ Pump feature these days. Makes filling the car up a little bit less of a chore!), then we need to grab a click and collect order of drinks for the weekend.
We arrive at our next destination around 10 am where I need to pick up a few things. I pop into Mecca Maxima, H&M as well as a few other stores, and leave around 10:45 am as Hunter is starting to get tired. I give him some snacks to eat while we are at the shops to tide him over.
We arrive back home at 11 am, and I set Hunter down for a play while I unpack. He starts to get grizzly around 11:30 am, so I put him down for a nap. He will sleep from anywhere between 1-3 hours! It changes daily.
Once Hunter is down, I decide to dive into some work. I need to reply to some emails, make the graphic for this post and a few other bits and pieces. All the things that go on behind the scenes that make this Instagram/Blogging gig very time-consuming. But I do love it and pride myself on running everything as best I can. At about 12:30 pm I fix myself a snack (I tend to be more of a grazer throughout the day, and have bigger meals at breakfast and/or dinner) and take a look at my Instagram scheduling for the next few weeks. At 1:30 pm Hunter wakes from his nap.
I go into Hunter’s room to get him up and change him, then set him down at his highchair with some crayons while I get his lunch ready. I want to give him something at least slightly nutritional, so I decide to try one of the frozen Annabel Karmel meals I purchased from Coles during the week. He absolutely loves it which is great to know as I think they will be a super handy addition to the freezer.
After lunch, I debate whether to take Lady to the park, as the sky is looking a bit dismal and I’m unsure whether it will rain again. I decide to go out to the backyard to throw the ball and let Hunter play for a while. He loves watching Lady run around and quite often bursts into uncontrollable giggles.
We come back inside and I need to put some washing away, so take Hunter to the master bedroom and put the Wiggles on the TV for him to watch while I get that job done.
A 2:30 pm I decide it is time for an afternoon coffee (I never had more than one coffee a day before becoming a mum..) and put Hunter down in the living area to play while I sit and enjoy it and take a look at my to-do list and do some work on the computer. Once I have ticked a few things off, I settle down to play with Hunter and read some stories. I prepare a small late afternoon snack for Hunter to keep him happy until dinner time.
Jarrod arrives home around 4 pm, which is a nice surprise as he normally isn’t home until around our dinner time. He offers to sort out Hunter’s dinner and I pour us a glass of wine and we chat about our days. I sneak off to do a bit more work, as Hubby also wants to give Hunter his bath. 90% of the time I handle dinner and bath time solo, so it was nice to have a break from the routine!
By 6 pm, Hunter is bathed and ready for bed, so I decide to go and have a shower while Jarrod prepares Hunter’s bottle. I have a thing about having a shower before dinner time – something I know I will need to get over in the coming years once Hutner is a bit older!
At 6:30 pm we tuck Hunter into bed and decide to get some rice paper rolls for dinner due to the no food in the house issue. Jarrod goes off to collect those while I sort the kitchen out and close the house down for the evening and get my bag sorted for school in the morning. After dinner, we watch the end of American Horror Story (well I do, J fell asleep!) and call it a day!
I hope you enjoyed that little look into what a day can look like around here! This was a pretty boring one as far as activities go. As I mentioned, no two days are the same – some days I am a Stay at Home Mum, somedays a Work at Home Mum and others a Working Mum. It keeps life interesting and full of surprises and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
